About Layman Publishing Partners

Core Values

The core values that guide our business practices stem from our sense of responsibility—our responsibility to serve our clients well, our responsibility to maintain high standards of quality and serviceability in the material we produce, and our responsibility to provide a working environment that ensures the wellbeing of our staff.

Simply put, we care—about our relationships both inside and outside the company and about our work product.

Such high-minded statements are easy to declare and meaningless unless they are consistently demonstrated.

We stand on our record: a reputation for creating and producing award-winning, user-friendly reference materials over more than forty years, including the most significant publications in the field; a history of cordial working relationships with thousands of international scholars who function as our editorial partners; a tradition of maintaining a dedicated, experienced, and ardent staff fully engaged in their work.

We care, and we prove it every day.

Our Story

Shelves holding decades of Dictionary of Literary Biography volumes

Layman Publishing Partners traces its origins to April 1976, when the late Matthew J. Bruccoli (d. 2008) and C. E. Frazer Clark Jr. (d. 2001) founded Bruccoli Clark in Columbia, South Carolina. The first major publication of the Bruccoli Clark imprint was First Printings of American Authors (1977), followed in 1978 by Volume 1 of the Dictionary of Literary Biography, which would become the most significant ongoing literary reference series in publishing history.

Over the decades that followed, the company grew and evolved. Bruccoli Clark became Bruccoli Clark Layman in 1983, with Richard Layman joining as a principal. The Manly Inc. imprint was established in 1994 to manage the American Decades and related series for Gale Research. Layman Poupard Publishing was formed in 2010, the same year we began producing the expanded Gale Literature Resource Center.

In 2026, the company entered its next chapter as Layman Publishing Partners—a name that reflects both our founding relationships and our forward-looking identity as a full-service publishing partner for the academic, institutional, and commercial markets we serve.

Fifty years. More than 425 volumes of the Dictionary of Literary Biography. Over a quarter of a billion words produced for Gale Cengage alone. Multiple Dartmouth Medal recognitions, PROSE Award distinctions, and Choice and Library Journal honors. One constant: a commitment to authoritative content and best-in-class publishing.
